In the domain of medical advancement, nanotechnology plays a pivotal role, especially in the synthesis of biocompatible materials for therapeutic use. Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (SPIONs), known for their magnetic properties and low toxicity, stand at the forefront of this innovation. This study explored the reproductive toxicological effects of Sodium Citrate-functionalized SPIONs (Cit_SPIONs) in adult male mice, an area of research that holds significant potential yet remains largely unknown. Our findings reveal that Cit_SPIONs induce notable morphological changes in interstitial cells and the seminiferous epithelium when introduced via intratesticular injection. This observation is critical in understanding the interactions of nanomaterials within reproductive biological systems. A striking feature of this study is the rapid localization of Cit_SPIONs in Leydig cells post-injection, a factor that appears to be closely linked with the observed decrease in steroidogenic activity and testosterone levels. This data suggests a possible application in developing nanostructured therapies targeting androgen-related processes. Over 56 days, these nanoparticles exhibited remarkable biological distribution in testis parenchyma, infiltrating various cells within the tubular and intertubular compartments. While the duration of spermatogenesis remained unchanged, there were many Tunel-positive germ cells, a notable reduction in daily sperm production, and reduced progressive sperm motility in the treated group. These insights not only shed light on the intricate mechanisms of Cit_SPIONs interaction with the male reproductive system but also highlight the potential of nanotechnology in developing advanced biomedical applications.

This study investigated the respiratory activity in adult Wistar rats across different behavioral seizure severity induced by pentylenetetrazole (PTZ). Animals underwent surgery for electrodes implantation, allowing simultaneous EEG and diaphragm EMG (DIAEMG) recordings and the respiratory frequency and DIAEMG amplitude were measured. Seizures were acutely induced through PTZ injection and classified based on a pre-established score, with absence-like seizures (spike wave discharge (SWD) events on EEG) representing the lowest score. The respiratory activity was grouped into the different seizure severities. During absence-like and myoclonic jerk seizures, the breathing frequency decreased significantly (∼50% decrease) compared to pre- and post-ictal periods. Pronounced changes occurred with more severe seizures (clonic and tonic) with periods of apnea, especially during tonic seizures. Apnea duration was significantly higher in tonic compared to clonic seizures. Notably, during PTZ-induced tonic seizures the apnea events were marked by tonic DIAEMG contraction (tonic-phase apnea). In the majority of animals (5 out of 7) this was a fatal event in which the seizure-induced respiratory arrest preceded the asystole. In conclusion, we provide an assessment of the respiratory activity in the PTZ-induced acute seizures and showed that breathing dysfunction is more pronounced in seizures with higher severity.

OBJECTIVE: To identify whether safety huddle implementation enabled a change in patient safety culture. METHOD: Quasi-experimental research that assessed patient safety culture before and after safety huddle implementation. RESULTS.: The study revealed that 53.98% completed the two safety culture assessments, with 60.1% adherence from the nursing team, with a statistically significant difference in the second assessment regarding perception of patient safety and adverse events notified (p < 0.00). Regarding good practice indicators, a statistically significant difference (p < 0.00) was observed in item 43 and improvement in almost all dimensions in the second safety culture assessment. The huddles totaled 105 days, with 100% adherence from the nursing team. Regarding checklist items, all presented satisfactory responses (above 50%). CONCLUSION: Safety huddles proved to be an effective tool for communication between healthcare professionals and managers, demonstrating positive impacts on good practice indicators and most safety culture dimensions.

Orthognathic surgery is indicated to modify the position of the maxillomandibular structure; changes in the mandibular position after osteotomy can be related to changes in the position of the mandibular condyle in the articular fossa. The aim of this study was to determine changes produced in the mandibular condyle 6 months after orthognathic surgery. A cross-sectional study was conducted that included subjects who had undergone bimaxillary orthognathic surgery to treat dentofacial deformity of Angle class II (group CII) or Angle class III (group CIII). Standardized images were taken using cone-beam computed tomography 21 days before surgery and 6 months after surgery; measurement scales were used to identify the condylar position and its relations with the anterior, superior, and posterior joint spaces. The results were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk and Student's t-tests, while considering a value of p < 0.05 as indicating a significant difference. Fifty-two joints from 26 patients, with an average age of 27.9 years (±10.81), were analyzed. All subjects in both group CII and group CIII showed a significant change in the anterior, superior, and posterior joint spaces. However, postoperative changes in the position of the condyle in the articular fossa were not significant in the anteroposterior analysis. We conclude that orthognathic surgery causes changes in the sagittal position of the mandibular condyle in subjects with mandibular retrognathism and prognathism.

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and sleep fragmentation are often observed in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and are poorly understood despite their considerable impact on quality of life. We examined the ability of a neurotoxin-based mouse model of PD to reproduce these disorders and tested the potential counteracting effects of dopamine replacement therapy. Experiments were conducted in female mice with a unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine lesion of the medial forebrain bundle, leading to the loss of dopamine neurons projecting to the dorsal and ventral striatum. Sham-operated mice were used as control. Electroencephalographic and electromyographic recording was used to identify and quantify awaken, rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM (NREM) sleep states. PD mice displayed enhanced NREM sleep and reduced wakefulness during the active period of the 24-hour circadian cycle, indicative of EDS. In addition, they also showed fragmentation of NREM sleep and increased slow-wave activity, a marker of sleep pressure. Electroencephalographic analysis of the PD model also revealed decreased density and increased length of burst-like thalamocortical oscillations (spindles). Treatment of PD mice with the dopamine receptor agonist, pramipexole, but not with L-DOPA, counteracted EDS by reducing the number, but not the length, of NREM sleep episodes during the first half of the active period. The present model recapitulates some prominent PD-related anomalies affecting sleep macro- and micro-structure. Based on the pharmacological profile of pramipexole these results also indicate the involvement of impaired dopamine D2/D3 receptor transmission in EDS.

Orthognathic surgery is used to modify anomalies in maxillomandibular position; this process can significantly affect the anatomy of the airway and cause functional changes. This study aims to define the impact of mandibular maxillary movement on the airway of subjects with dentofacial deformity. A retrospective study was conducted on subjects with Angle class II (CII group) and Angle class III (CIII group) dentofacial deformities. The subjects were treated via bimaxillary surgery; for all of them, planning was performed with software and 3D printing. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was obtained 21 days before surgery and 6 months after surgery and was used for planning and follow-up with the same conditions and equipment. Was used the superimposition technique to obtain the maximum and minimum airway areas and total airway volume. The data were analyzed with the Shapiro-Wilk test and Student's t-test, while Spearman's test was used to correlate the variables, considering a value of p < 0.05. Thus, 76 subjects aged 18 to 55 years (32.38 ± 10.91) were included: 46 subjects were in CII group, treated with a maxillo-mandibular advancement, and 30 subjects were in the CIII group, treated with a maxillary advancement and a mandibular setback. In the CII group, a maxillary advancement of +2.45 mm (±0.88) and a mandibular advancement of +4.25 mm (±1.25) were observed, with a significant increase in all the airway records. In the CIII group, a maxillary advancement of +3.42 mm (±1.25) and a mandibular setback of -3.62 mm (±1.18) were noted, with no significant changes in the variables measured for the airway (p > 0.05). It may be concluded that maxillo-mandibular advancement is an effective procedure to augment the airway area and volume in the CII group. On the other hand, in subjects with mandibular prognathism and Angle class III operated with the maxillary advancement and mandibular setback lower than 4 mm, it is possible to not reduce the areas and volume in the airway.

Rationalized development of electrical stimulation (ES) therapy is of paramount importance. Not only it will foster new techniques and technologies with increased levels of safety, efficacy, and efficiency, but it will also facilitate the translation from basic research to clinical practice. For such endeavor, design of new technologies must dialogue with state-of-the-art neuroscientific knowledge. By its turn, neuroscience is transitioning-a movement started a couple of decades earlier-into adopting a new conceptual framework for brain architecture, in which time and thus temporal patterns plays a central role in the neuronal representation of sampled data from the world. This article discusses how neuroscience has evolved to understand the importance of brain rhythms in the overall functional architecture of the nervous system and, consequently, that neuromodulation research should embrace this new conceptual framework. Based on such support, we revisit the literature on standard (fixed-frequency pulsatile stimuli) and mostly non-standard patterns of ES to put forward our own rationale on how temporally complex stimulation schemes may impact neuromodulation strategies. We then proceed to present a low frequency, on average (thus low energy), scale-free temporally randomized ES pattern for the treatment of experimental epilepsy, devised by our group and termed NPS (Non-periodic Stimulation). The approach has been shown to have robust anticonvulsant effects in different animal models of acute and chronic seizures (displaying dysfunctional hyperexcitable tissue), while also preserving neural function. In our understanding, accumulated mechanistic evidence suggests such a beneficial mechanism of action may be due to the natural-like characteristic of a scale-free temporal pattern that may robustly compete with aberrant epileptiform activity for the recruitment of neural circuits. Delivering temporally patterned or random stimuli within specific phases of the underlying oscillations (i.e., those involved in the communication within and across brain regions) could both potentiate and disrupt the formation of neuronal assemblies with random probability. The usage of infinite improbability drive here is obviously a reference to the "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" comedy science fiction classic, written by Douglas Adams. The parallel is that dynamically driving brain functional connectogram, through neuromodulation, in a manner that would not favor any specific neuronal assembly and/or circuit, could re-stabilize a system that is transitioning to fall under the control of a single attractor. We conclude by discussing future avenues of investigation and their potentially disruptive impact on neurotechnology, with a particular interest in NPS implications in neural plasticity, motor rehabilitation, and its potential for clinical translation.

OBJECTIVE: To verify the characteristics of the electromyographic signal of masticatory muscles in individuals with TMD and asymptomatic individuals. METHODS: A systematic review was carried out, selecting cross-sectional studies with at least one electromyographic parameter (FM; iEMG; RMS) of the masticatory muscles (anterior temporal, bilateral masseter, and suprahyoid muscles) of individuals with TMD compared to asymptomatic individuals. RESULTS: This review identified 1656 titles, of which 30 articles were included in the final analysis. It was observed that the data referring to the pattern of activation of masticatory muscles in the rest, isometry, and isotonic conditions of individuals with TMD are heterogeneous. This fact may be related to variability in the methods and analyses applied in the studies. CONCLUSION: Data referring to the pattern of activation of masticatory muscles in the rest and isometry conditions and in the mastication cycle of individuals with TMD and asymptomatic individuals are diverse.

There is no consensus on the most appropriate method for normalizing electromyography (EMG) signals from masticatory muscles during isotonic activity. Aim: To analyze the best method for data processing of the EMG signal of the masticatory muscles during isotonic activity (non-habitual chewing), comparing raw data and different types of normalization. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. Women aged between 18 and 45 years were selected. Anthropometric data were collected (age, height, body mass index ­ BMI, masticatory preference) as well as EMG signal (root mean square ­ RMS) data for the anterior temporal and masseter bilaterally, and for the suprahyoid muscles, during isotonic (non-habitual chewing) and isometric tasks. EMG data were processed offline using Matlab® Software. The normalization of the EMG signal was carried out using the 2nd masticatory cycle, chosen at random, of the 20 cycles collected, the maximum RMS value, and the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). To analyze the best method of data processing for the isotonic data, the coefficient of variation (CV) was calculated. Descriptive data analysis was adopted, using the mean and standard deviation. ANOVA with repeated measures was used to detect significant differences between the methods of normalization. Statistical significance was set at 5% (α<0.05). Results: The final sample of this research was composed of 86 women. The volunteers presented an average age of 27.83±7.71 years and a mean BMI of 22.85±1.91 Kg/m2. Regarding masticatory preference, 73.25% reported the right side, and 26.75% the left side. Considering the comparison between the methods, the %CV measure of the 2nd cycle showed the lowest variation coefficient during biting for all the muscles from the raw data, RMS Max, and MVC (p=0.001, p=0.003, and p=0.001 respectively). Conclusion: In conclusion, for non-habitual chewing activity, the results of this study recommend data processing using normalization with the second cycle during chewing

Objetivo: avaliar cultura de segurança do paciente (CSP) na perspectiva da equipe multiprofissional atuante em um hospital geral. Método: estudo transversal com abordagem quantitativa, a partir da aplicação da versão eletrônica brasileira do instrumento Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture da Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. A coleta de dados ocorreu em agosto de 2022 por meio do E-questionário de CSP. Resultados: responderam ao questionário 236 profissionais da enfermagem, médicos e equipe multiprofissional. Das 12 dimensões da CSP avaliadas, destacaram-se sete com percentual entre 63,3% e 95%, consideradas fortes, uma com 50% de positividade, indicando uma dimensão em crescimento, e quatro com percentuais abaixo, com 50% de respostas positivas apontadas como áreas fracas. Conclusão: foi possível avaliar a CSP no ambiente hospitalar e perceber as dimensões fortes, fracas e aquelas em crescimento. Progredir nessa prática é desafiador para as equipes que buscam uma organização confiável.


Objective: to assess patient safety culture (PSC) from the perspective of the multidisciplinary team working at a general hospital. Method: this a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, based on the application of the Brazilian electronic version of the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Data collection took place in August 2022 through E-questionário de PSC. Results: a total of 236 nursing professionals, doctors and multidisciplinary teams responded to the questionnaire. Of the 12 PSC dimensions assessed, seven stood out with percentages between 63.3% and 95%, considered strong, one with 50% positivity, indicating a growing dimension, and four with lower percentages, with 50% of positive answers identified as weak areas. Conclusion: it was possible to assess PSC in the hospital environment and perceive the strong, weak and growing dimensions. Progressing in this practice is challenging for teams looking for a reliable organization.


Objetivo: evaluar la cultura de seguridad del paciente (CSP) desde la perspectiva del equipo multidisciplinario que trabaja en un hospital general. Método: estudio transversal, con enfoque cuantitativo, utilizando la versión electrónica brasileña del instrumento Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture del Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. La recopilación de datos se realizó en agosto de 2022 mediante el cuestionario electrónico CSP. Resultados: respondieron al cuestionario 236 profesionales de enfermería, médicos y equipos multidisciplinares. De las 12 dimensiones del CSP evaluadas, siete destacaron con un porcentaje entre 63,3% y 95%, considerada fuerte, una con 50% de positividad, indicando una dimensión en crecimiento, y cuatro con porcentajes más bajos, con un 50% de respuestas positivas identificadas como áreas débiles. Conclusión: fue posible evaluar la PSC en el ambiente hospitalario y percibir las dimensiones fuertes, débiles y crecientes. Avanzar en esta práctica es un desafío para los equipos que buscan una organización confiable.

Método: Investigación cuasiexperimental, que evaluó la cultura de seguridad del paciente antes y después de la implementación del safety huddle. Resultados: El estudio reveló que el 53,98% completó las dos evaluaciones de la cultura de seguridad, con un 60,1% de adherencia por parte del equipo de enfermería, con diferencia estadísticamente significativa en la segunda evaluación en cuanto a la percepción de seguridad del paciente y eventos adversos reportados (p < 0,00). En cuanto a los indicadores de buenas prácticas, se observó una diferencia estadísticamente significativa (p < 0,00) en el ítem 43 y una mejora en casi todas las dimensiones en la segunda evaluación de la cultura de seguridad. Los huddles totalizaron 105 días, con 100% de adherencia por parte del equipo de enfermería. En cuanto a los ítems del checklist, todos presentaron respuestas satisfactorias (por encima del 50%). Conclusión: Los safety huddles demostraron ser una herramienta eficaz para la comunicación entre los profesionales de la salud y los gerentes, demostrando impactos positivos en los indicadores de buenas prácticas y en la mayoría de las dimensiones de la cultura de seguridad.


RESUMO Objetivo: Identificar se a implementação do safety huddle possibilitou mudança na cultura de segurança do paciente. Método: Pesquisa quase-experimental, que avaliou a cultura de segurança do paciente antes e após a implementação do safety huddle. Resultados: O estudo revelou que 53,98% preencheram as duas avaliações da cultura de segurança, com 60,1% de adesão da equipe de enfermagem, com diferença estatisticamente significativa na segunda avaliação quanto à percepção da segurança do paciente e eventos adversos notificados (p < 0,00). Quanto aos indicadores de boas práticas, observou-se diferença estatisticamente significativa (p < 0,00) no item 43 e melhoria em quase todas as dimensões na segunda avaliação da cultura de segurança. Os huddles totalizaram 105 dias, com 100% de adesão da equipe de enfermagem. Quanto aos itens do checklist, todos apresentaram respostas satisfatórias (acima de 50%). Conclusão: Os safety huddles revelaram-se uma ferramenta eficaz para a comunicação entre profissionais de saúde e gestores, demonstrando impactos positivos nos indicadores de boas práticas e na maioria das dimensões da cultura de segurança.

Aim: The study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of the maximum bilateral molar bite force and the Root Mean Square (RMS) Electromyography (EMG) index of the masticatory muscles in the maximum bilateral molar bite (MMBMax) of women with myogenic Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) and asymptomatic. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, composed of 86 women allocated to the TMD Group (n=43) and Control Group (n=43) diagnosis through the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders. The maximum bilateral molar bite force was evaluated using a bite dynamometer and the RMS EMG index of the masticatory muscles (anterior temporalis, masseter) during 5 seconds of the MMBMax task. Student t-test was used for data comparison between accuracy of the bite force and RMS EMG of masticatory muscles during the MMBMax. Results: The maximum bilateral molar bite force showed high accuracy (AUC=0.99) for the diagnosis of women with myogenic TMD and asymptomatic women, and the RMS EMG index evaluated during the MMBMax showed a moderate level of accuracy for all masticatory muscles (AUC=0.70 to 0.75). Conclusion: The bilateral bite dynamometer with a surface EMG during bilateral bite can be used to diagnose TMD in young women

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is recognized for its high prevalence, presenting characteristic signs and symptoms. Cervical spine pain is present in 70% of diagnosed TMD cases. Aim To verify if women with TMD present changes in isometric muscle strength in the scapula elevation. Methods This is an observational, cross-sectional study. Thirty-five women, aged 22.89±2.04 years, were divided into the TMD group (TMDG), diagnosed with TMD according to the DC/TMD, and control group (CG), with asymptomatic individuals. The volunteers accessed a online link by the smartphone in order to answer questions on personal data, the Fonseca Anamnestic Index (FAI), Neck Disability Index (NDI), and Masticatory preference. In all participants, evaluation of the force of the scapula elevation muscles was performed, using a load cell model MM-100 (Kratos® SP, Brazil). Data were analyzed descriptively using the maximum, mean, and standard deviation and a two-way ANCOVA test was applied for all variables. A significance level of 5% was considered. Results There were no statistically significant differences between the TMDG and CG for the maximal and mean muscle strength of scapular elevation. There were statistically significant differences in FAI (p <0.001*) between the CG and the TMDG. Conclusion Based on the results, it was not possible to confirm the hypothesis that women diagnosed with TMD present lower isometric strength during scapular elevation (right/left).

BACKGROUND: The phytocannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) has previously shown to have anticonvulsant effects in preclinical and clinical studies. Recently, CBD has been approved to treat certain types of drug-resistant epileptic syndromes. However, the underlying mechanism of action remains unclear. The phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) signaling pathway has been proposed to modulate seizures and might be recruited by CBD. Thus, we tested the hypothesis that the anticonvulsant effect of CBD involves PI3K in a seizure model induced by pentylenetetrazole (PTZ). METHODS: We employed pharmacological and genetic approaches to inhibit PI3K and quantified its effects on seizure duration, latency, and number. RESULTS: PI3K genetic ablation increased the duration and number of seizures. CBD inhibited PTZ-induced seizures in mice. Genetic deletion of PI3K or pretreatment with the selective inhibitor LY294002 prevented CBD effects. CONCLUSION: Our data strengthen the hypothesis that the CBD anticonvulsant effect requires the PI3K signaling pathway.

This study evaluated, by mechanical testing, the strength of four-hole grid plates used for mandibular angle fracture fixation. Much has been discussed about the treatment of mandibular fractures with straight or curved plates. However, there are few studies about the use of grid plates. The geometry of such plates provides three-dimensional stability, resistance against torque associated with a low profile. Ninety polyurethane hemimandibles were used as substratum. The hemimandibles were divided into nine groups and fixation of the fractures was performed varying the type and position of plate and type of screw. An intact hemimandible group was used as control. It was possible to observe that plates positioned at the tension zone present the highest load values, both for dislocations of 3 and 5 mm. There was no statistical difference when plates with or without an intermediate bar were tested. The locking screws were more efficient than the non-locking screws when the plates were positioned at the neutral zone. Results allowed us to conclude that grid plates installed at the tension zone presented greater mechanical efficiency. If grid plates are positioned at the neutral zone, they should have an intermediate bar and be fixed with locking screws.

Central giant cell granulomas (CGCG) are not common in the mandibular condyle. In teenagers, the problem is more complex because of difficulties in diagnosis and treatment involving the potential growth of the mandibular process and development of the face. In this short communication a case is presented of an eleven-year-old female under diagnosis of central giant cell granuloma affecting the mandibular condyle treated surgically in two steps using a condylectomy and vertical ramus osteotomy at the first time and later orthognathic surgery, showing the clinical evolution after 13 years of follow-up. In addition, we performed a review of the scientific reports related to CGCG in the mandibular condyle to compare this treatment with others, in terms of follow-up and results. We concluded that the CGCG affecting the mandibular head can be properly treated with low condilectomy, vertical mandibular ramus sliding osteotomy, and discopexy.

The aim of this research was to analyze the facial class, presence of malocclusion, and the mandibular plane and to relate this to the mandibular condyle position. A cross-sectional study in subjects under analysis for orthognathic surgery was done. The mandibular plane, the gonial angle, and the molar class were included to compare the coronal and sagittal position of the condyle and the joint space observed in the CBCT. The measurements were obtained by the same observer at an interval of two weeks. In addition, the Spearman test was performed to determine the correlation using a p value < 0.05 to observe any significant differences. Eighty-nine male and female subjects (18 to 58 years old, 24.6 ± 10.5) were included. In the coronal section, subjects with CIII had a greater mediolateral distance (MLD, p = 0.0001) and greater vertical distance (SID, p = 0.0001) than subjects with CII. In terms of the skeletal class and the mandibular plane, it was observed that subjects in the CII group had a greater mandibular angle (open angle) (p = 0.04) than the CII group and was related to the anterior position of the condyle. The most anterior condylar position was observed in the CII group (p = 0.03), whereas a posterior condylar position was significant in CIII subjects (p = 0.03). We can conclude that the sagittal position of the TMJ was related to the mandibular plane and the skeletal class showing a higher mandibular angle and most anterior position of the condyle in CII subjects and a lower mandibular angle and most posterior position of the condyle in CIII subjects. The implications for surgical treatment have to be considered.

Based on the rationale that neural hypersynchronization underlies epileptic phenomena, nonperiodic stimulation (NPS) was designed and successfully tested as an electrical stimulus with robust anticonvulsant action. Considering the scale-free temporal structure of NPS mimics natural-like activity, here we hypothesized its application to the amygdala would induce minor to none impairment of neural function in treated animals. Wistar rats underwent gold-standard behavioral tests such as open field (OF), elevated plus-maze (EPM), novel object recognition, and social interaction test in order to evaluate the functions of base-level anxiety, motor function, episodic memory, and sociability. We also performed daily (8 days, 6 h per day) electrophysiological recordings (local field potential/LFP and electromyography) to assess global forebrain dynamics and the sleep-wake cycle architecture and integrity. All animals displayed an increased proportion of time exploring new objects, spent more time in the closed arms of the EPM and in the periphery of the OF arena, with similar numbers of crossing between quadrants and no significant changes of social behaviors. In the sleep-wake cycle electrophysiology experiments, we found no differences regarding duration and proportion of sleep stages and the number of transitions between stages. Finally, the power spectrum of LFP recordings and neurodynamics were also unaltered. We concluded that NPS did not impair neural functions evaluated and thus, it may be safe for clinical studies. Additionally, results corroborate the notion that NPS may exert an on-demand only desynchronization effect by efficiently competing with epileptiform activity for the physiological and healthy recruitment of neural circuitry. Considering the very dynamical nature of circuit activation and functional activity underlying neural function in general (including cognition, processing of emotion, memory acquisition, and sensorimotor integration) and its corruption leading to disorder, such mechanism of action may have important implications in the investigation of neuropsychological phenomena and also in the development of rehabilitation neurotechnology.

PURPOSE: To compare the speaking space, perceived rotational movement during chewing, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of elderly people rehabilitated with new conventional complete dentures (CDs) and single-implant mandibular overdentures (SIMOs) using a paired design. Patient expectations for SIMO use were also evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The participants were 22 elderly users of unsatisfactory CDs. They received new sets of conventional CDs, and assessment was performed after 2 months of use. Speaking space was recorded with a kinesiograph while participants read a list of words. Participants were asked two questions about perceived posterior rotational denture movement during chewing. The Dental Impact on Daily Living (DIDL) questionnaire was used to examine OHRQoL, and a visual analog scale was used to quantify participants' SIMO expectations. Subsequently, the mandibular CDs were converted to SIMOs, and the assessment was repeated after 2 months of use. Speaking space and OHRQoL data were submitted to ANOVA and Student t test, and perceived mandibular movement and expectation data were examined using likelihood-ratio chi-square test. RESULTS: The speaking space and perceived rotational movement did not differ between CD and SIMO use. General performance and eating restriction DIDL scores increased after SIMO insertion. Participants' SIMO expectations regarding speaking, cleaning, esthetics, and general aspects were met. CONCLUSION: Relative to CD use, SIMO use did not change the speaking space or perceived rotational movement when chewing among elderly patients. It improved OHRQoL via enhancement of two DIDL dimensions and met most elderly patients' expectations.
